It’s no secret, that startup culture is very much a “pay it forward” ecosystem. It’s a big part of what makes startup cultures thrive. “A rising tide lifts all boats” or some cliche like that.
I’ve been on the receiving end of “pay it forward” more times than I could ever hope to count. I’ve been fortunate to be part of networks that truly embrace this idea and live it everyday. TechStars mentors & alumni, True Ventures’ portfolio companies, PSF, PIE, and tons of individuals.
I’ve done an ok job of giving back, but it’s hard to keep that perspective when you’re heads down on your own startup.
And that got me thinking about 20% Time and setting aside time to give back and help out. So, I’ve began making a conscious effort to block off time on my calendar to make extra time for coffee/beer meetings, to make intros, to talk through problems, etc.
